GREEN GOLD

Coffee plantations have existed for centuries in Papua but have never been the primary source of income. Most farmers traditionally grew fruits and vegetables for sustenance. However, in recent years, the rising prices of Arabica coffee in Indonesia have made coffee farming an attractive source of income. In Papua, where over 30% of the population lives below the poverty line, producing high-quality coffee has the potential to improve livelihoods significantly.

Yafeth Wetipo, a coffee roaster and processor, founded Highland Coffee in 2014 to help farmers earn higher incomes and improve their quality of life. Partnering with farmers from 10 villages, Yafeth paid premium prices for high-quality beans, encouraging better production practices. Over time, he successfully built a value chain that supports farmers at every step—from growing and processing coffee to roasting and selling it.

Through his roastery, Yafeth has also trained young farmers as baristas, roasters, and Q graders, equipping them to take ownership of the process and even pursue exporting their own coffee. Now, his focus is on expanding participation, especially among younger generations, to inspire more communities to embrace specialty coffee production as a sustainable and transformational source of income.

The challenges, however, remain significant. Papua’s history of resource exploitation, political tensions, poor infrastructure, and high transportation costs due to adverse weather continue to hinder progress. Limited technical knowledge and market access also make it difficult for many farmers to consistently produce high-quality coffee.

Despite these hurdles, Highland Roastery is driving change, one cup at a time. Coffee is emerging as Papua’s next big opportunity, earning its nickname: "green gold."

NOTABLE

In the last 10 years of working with farmers in Papua, Yafeth has observed that higher incomes from coffee farming have led to meaningful changes in their lives. Many farmers now prioritize sending their children to school, ensuring better opportunities for the next generation. Increased earnings have also enabled farmers to start savings programs, adopt healthier diets, and enjoy an improved quality of life overall.
